How to Set a Dinner Table

Now that the holidays are creeping up, chances are you will end up throwing a dinner party or having guests over for the festivities. You can make a lasting impression with having everything be impeccable in appearance when your guests arrive. This includes setting up the dinner table.

 

 

 

Setting the table is often a last minute task, which might end up looking sloppy if not done properly. Save stress on your dinner plans with these easy table setting ideas.

 

Basic Table Setting

 

This is the most common setting which is appropriate for most occasions. The plate is positioned in the center of the place setting, and the flatware is arranged around the plate in the order that it is used:

  • Left of the plate is the fork.

  • The right of the plate is the knife and spoon. The knife is placed directly to the right with the sharp edge towards the plate. The spoon is beside it on the right.

  • The glass goes above the knife.

  • Napkins can be put under forks or on the plate.

Luncheon Table Setting

 

Start off with the basic table setting and add to it with these items:

  • If you are serving a salad, the salad fork is placed on the left of the dinner fork. If a dessert will be served, use a dessert fork and place it on the right of the dinner fork.

  • If you are serving soup, set the bowl on the plate and put a soup spoon to the right of the beverage spoon.

  • Salad/bread and butter plates will be on the left of the forks. Position the butter plates above the forks with the butter knife across the plate.

  • Cups and saucers will go above the spoon, with the handle towards the right. Wine/water glasses can be put on the left of the cup and saucer.

Former Dinner Table Setting

 

Start off with the luncheon table setting and add to it with the following suggestions.

  • Any white and red wine glasses (if you are planning on serving) along with the water glasses, will be placed on the left of the coffee cup.

  • The beverage, soup and/or dessert spoons are placed on the right of the knife. Or if you prefer, they can be bought to the table when the soup and/or dessert is served.

  • If you want a fancier element, place a charger (a service plate that serves as a base for the other pieces of silverware that will be placed on it) under the dinner plate.

Other suggestions that will make your dinner table setting skills sharp are:

  • Bring out your best plates, flatware, silverware etc.

  • Serve appetizers in the living room before sitting down.

  • Make sure all glasses of water are filled, and the butter and bread is laid out for guests before they sit down.
