What to Look for in Your Next Sofa

June 23, 2018

Try sitting on an uncomfortable sofa and see if you can enjoy a conversation for even 15 minutes. Try watching a film on TV, lounging on squeaky sofa seats. See if your grandma enjoys sinking into a soft sofa that doesn’t provide firm support. Then see if she can lift herself up easily without support. You may now understand why choosing the right sofa is a matter of discussion here!

Buying a sofa sounds like a simple enough proposition but it really can be quite a task. A sofa set is an important investment that can define the look of your living room. It takes up a large space and plays a big role in keeping your family and friends comfortable. Choose it with care keeping these valuable tips in mind.

Measure First

Before you set out to look at the colours, shape and style, make sure you take the right measurements of your living room space where you plan to place your sofa. Use a measuring tape to judge the sofa dimensions in the store. Don’t forget to measure the doors and stairway of your home to ensure your sofa passes through easily without chipping the wall paint upon delivery. If the access is limited, consider a sofa with removable legs or one that can be delivered in sections.

Try and Buy

It helps to have an ergonomic design. Sitting on a sofa that does not offer firm back support can give you aches and pains, even if you ordinarily don’t suffer from them. Unlike office sofas that usually adhere to basic body-friendly principles, home decor is not always suitable for musculoskeletal health. If you don’t want to end with a sore back, choose a sofa that supports your spine and seat. If you like to stretch out, look for wide armrests. Sofas with short legs are easier to manoeuvre than those without. Sit on the sofa to get a good feel before you decide to invest in it.

Firm Frame and Cushions

Look for a sofa that has a high-quality frame. It will see you through many years of lounging. Solid hardwood frame works well. Avoid metal or particle board construction. Check that the cushions are high on support too. Feather-filled cushions make it look soft and comfortable but without regular pumping, they will lose shape, plus the foam and fibre filling will flatten out. Chose a combination of feather and foam for good structure combined with comfort.

Your choice of upholstery will impact the entire decor of your room. Whether you choose a neutral colour, floral patterns or a bold colour, check to see if it compliments the rest of your home. Sometimes a piece of furniture looks good in a store but may look out of place in your home. A bright red sofa, for instance, may stand out in a furniture store but may look too bright in your home. When in doubt, go for soft neutral shades that can be accessories with bright cushions. Natural fabrics fade in excessive sunlight so synthetic fabric may be a better option if you plan to place it near a window. If you have children or pets, look for a sofa that is easy to spot clean. Loose washable covers are a good option because they can be removed and cleaned.
